6 Simple Tips to Help You Outsource Effectively
If you’ve ever had the thought of “It will be quicker if I just do it myself”, then take the time to read this short article.
It most definitely could be true that it would be quicker if you did do it yourself - this one time. But what about the next time, and the next, and the next,….start adding up those 20, 30, 40 times you find yourself doing the same thing. How much does that time add up to? The real gift and value in
The real value of outsourcing happens when you add up all that time that you were spending what you most love and are great at, because you chose to outsource (or some may refer to it as delegate). Successful individuals, entrepreneurs, business, or even family members are reaching much of this success because they’ve learned the art of handing over effectively and using that time to do what they love and do well. Think about it for just a moment. Let’s say you spend 1 hour per week doing something, that you know you could have handed off to someone else. That would only be one hour right? Maybe not. What if that one thing is done weekly? That would make it 52 hours in a year, which is longer than a regular 40 hour work week. Now take that amount and multiply it by your hourly rate. How much did that come out to? Did it surprise you a bit? It did surprise me the first time I did this simple exercise.
In simple words, for every hour of your work week that you assign to someone else – you gain 52 hours a year that you could spend growing your business or on getting the results you want.
So here are some simple tips to help you start creating more time and efficiency:
- Write out where you are spending your time. Do it for just one week or two. Gain awareness of what you are doing.
- Look for what could be delegated. What are tasks that are repetitive, that you don’t want to do or are not your areas of expertise.
- Create a system and write it down. This way you don’t have to keep re-inventing the wheel and can keep using it. You may even consider putting it down as a checklist, and you can keep making it better the more you outsource.
- Be clear of your expectations, benchmarks, and accountability with the outsourcing person(s). Be clear of what you want them to do (keep it simple silly). Be clear of what you expect when. Follow through on checking in with the progress of the projects.
- Do & show, Have them Do, Repeat. – Show them once how you want it done and let them see you doing it. Then have them do it while you watch. Let them make mistakes, each one is is a learning opportunity that will make your process more effective each time. Your goal here should be to transfer knowledge, then refine, and then let go.
- Have a feedback process – Be honest and kind as you give feedback. Remember, they are trying to help, they just need a bit of support. So be patient with them.
