Please help me honor my sister’s memory…

I don’t need to say much about this, simply read the email below that I received from a dear friend of mine (Agnes).  I trust that if it is appropriate for you, you’ll chose to support this cause.  Thank you in advance for your support.

“Dear Friends and Family,

As some of you already know, my oldest sister, Molly Rehder, passed away on June 14, 2008 after an 8 months battle with a very rare and aggressive cancer, uterine leimyosarcoma (LMS). LMS, also known as “the dragon” to those familiar with it, is a rare cancer of smooth muscle tissue. LMS strikes approximately four in every one million people. Because of its rarity, few doctors know how to treat it, and it attracts little research. It is too common to qualify for government funds and too rare to attract interest from pharmaceutical companies, so it is up to the foundation and individuals to help raise funds for research and awareness. Currently there is no cure, only remission which is rarely achieved. It was my sister’s dream that researchers would find a cure to slay this terrible “dragon.” Although a cure is too late for Molly, I know she would want this dream to come true for others.

Those who know me, understand my dedication to a balanced life, with diet and exercise playing an important, but not all consuming role. My idea of a nice run was 3 miles and prior to August of 2008, I had never run more than 5 miles at one time in my entire life. I have often been heard to say that I would never be crazy enough to run a marathon. As the saying goes, “Never, say never.” I now feel that I have something more than running for the sake of running, which is why I have chosen a Marathon as a fund raising distance for this cause. On October 11, 2009, my sister-in-law, Karen, several other family members, and I will run the Full Long Beach Marathon in Molly’s honor and to raise money for the LM Sarcoma Direct Research Foundation. We are blessed to be able to run to help “Slay the Dragon.” You may have received this letter directly from me or have been contacted by one of the other people running with me.

We know there are many great charities that need your help, and we humbly ask that you consider donating $2 per mile or any amount that you can afford. Help us slay this dragon one mile at a time by writing a check or making an online donation to LM Sarcoma Direct Research.
