If you have not heard of Skype yet, then it is time you at least learn more about this very cool and effective service. At first I was kind of skeptical about this service, particularly because I had an unpleasant experience with another popular service (Vonage). So I looked into this tool with some caution. However, it has turned out to be one of the best tools and it has saved me hundreds of dollars, if not thousands by now.
Skype has many features, but the most popular feature is that this service is free, and you can use it to call anyone around the world for free (as long as they are using Skype as well). There are many, many other features that it has, but I’ll let the video below show some of these features instead of writing a long blog posting. But before we get into the video I want to make sure you know how to begin using this resource and discover the benefits for yourself.
- First go to Skype and download the software.
- Install the software into your computer by following their simple steps.
- Create an account (much like you would create an email or any other online account).
- Plug-in your computer headphones with microphone (or alternatively you can use a webcam).
- Make your first call to anyone else that has skype. (If you want to call a friend or family send this post to them and get them to follow these steps) – Enjoy using this great service.
Here is a video that explains some of Skype main features. Use the ones that are of most benefit to you.
A couple of additional notes worth mentioning. Skype also has additional (optional) paid features, most of which I’ve decided to use and purchase myself. The ones I believe are worth mentioning are the following. Remember, these are optional, but I find them very useful in my daily life and business.
- Unlimited US & Canada (SkypeOut) - This feature allows Unlimited calls* to landlines and cell phones in the United States and Canada. It also includes voicemail, Skype To Go and an online number discount.
- An online number (SkypeIn™) - is perfect if you have friends, family or business colleagues who don’t use Skype. Anyone can dial your online number from any phone or mobile and hey presto, your Skype rings and you pick up the call – wherever you are in the world.
I’ve used both of these features for less than $100 for an ENTIRE YEAR. Thus, I’ve reduced my regular phone line service and cell phone service and saved quite a bit of money. Overall, the quality and reliability of the service has been great. I expect the service to continue improving over the years and we can all benefit from all its resources.
Thus, the suggested action item is for you to start playing with Skype’s free service. Then decide if any of the other services are of use to you. Enjoy!
