Success is determined by these factors

Have you ever succeeded at reaching a goal and for some reason you didn’t quite feel that satisfaction that you thought you would have?  If so, how did you define success?

Allow me to share how I’ve often seen success defined, and an alternative definition of success.

I’ve experienced a number of individuals that I’ve supported where they originally defined success as simply getting the result they thought they wanted.  However, in the process they learned that there were some factors that were missing in their definition of success.  Not having considered these factors played a huge part in their dissatisfaction, even though many times they got the result they so desired.

An alternative definition of success that has provided a much more fullfilling outcome is as follows;

Success is…

  • Achieving the desired result.
  • Attaining it by a process that works for you.
  • While nurturing and strengthening relationships.
  • And being of service and contribution by attaining that outcome.

When these four factors are included as a definition of success, the results tend to be much more fulfilling and satisfactory for all involved.  Allow me to expand a bit more.

I’ll make my point by the following questions:

  • Would you feel fullfilled by having attained the result you desired while hurting or damaging relationships with others?
  • Would you feel successful if you hated every step of the process for getting to your desired result?
  • How fulfilling would it be to have reached a result that hurt others and/or your community?
  • And of course how successful would you consider your outcome if you didn’t get the result you originally wanted?

My point is simple, in order to attain true success, all four factors established in the alternative definition for success must be considered and attained.  Otherwise, there is a void that needs to be filled.

So next time you are looking to attain success, I encourage you to consider these alternative definition and allow yourself to create a truly fullfilling experience of success.
